Staying Safe On Campus

Student Life

All universities go to great lengths to protect its students. While security staff are present to help keep the campus safe, the safety of the campus and individuals is a shared responsibility. It is your duty to report any safety concerns to your university’s security office and always remember to be aware of your surroundings.

In this article, you will be armed with tips to help you ensure personal safety while securing a safe environment for yourself and neighbours. To keep your areas secure, follow these tips.

Watch your surroundings

When walking on campus alone, you should avoid being distracted on your phone. Most people are victimized when they often look confused, lost, sidetracked, or appear to need help.

Never walk alone.

It is safer to move in a pack with friends than walking alone, especially in the early mornings and evenings. Walking in groups can give you more power because it is harder to attack a large group of people than an individual.

Tell friends of your location each time

When going out, let someone know where you are going, where you are at each point in time, and when you intend coming back. You and your roommates can share regular updates on each other’s location. You can help each other in this way. Always share your class schedules and other regular programmes and activities with them always.

Know your roommates and neighbors

This is a very crucial tip if you live on your own for the first time. All you need to do is to be friendly with your roommates and neighbors. It provides a safety net for you and your neighbors. They will watch out for you and care about your well-being.

Save the campus security department's numbers

At all times the campus security and emergency phone numbers should be on speed dial.

Learn self-defense

Learning how to defend yourself cannot be a luxury on campus. Find time to learn or take a class in self-defense if you can.
