To study in Ghana, international students must be able to listen, read, write and speak English appreciably, or they will not be successful at a Ghanaian university.

Most Ghanaian universities require international students to demonstrate their English language skills, usually by taking an English language proficiency test.

Proficiency Waivers

You will mostly be exempted from English language testing requirements if:

• Your first language is English
• You were educated in a country where the native language is English
• You graduated from a high school where English was the primary language of instruction

A fast-growing approach for acquiring a waiver is taking English Language Proficiency lessons and test at the Ghana Institute of Languages, which is a shorter and effective test. Most Language Centres in universities also run a Certificate in English Proficiency programme for students from non-English-speaking countries.
