Making Great Friends In School

Tips & Tricks

“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”

– Walter Winchell

In this article, you will get to learn how to make great friends as an adult.

Let’s say you’re new at school. What’s the first thing you do? Most people think about the kind of person they want to meet (describe them), who can complement what they don’t have.

While finding friends can be difficult, think about where you might find a potential friend with qualities you consider desirable. It might mean joining clubs and societies with potential qualities as an informal requirement.

Go through the following cues:

What kind of person would I love hanging out with?

What made my childhood friend so special?

What kind of person fits well with my temperament?

What activities would I enjoy with this person?

Would this person like these activities?

The best way to test the quality in your friendship is respond positively to these questions.

  • Do I feel better after being with this person?
  • Am I myself when I am with this person?
  • Do I feel secure, or do I have to watch what I say and do?
  • Is the person supportive and treat me with respect?
  • Can I trust this person?

Remember that, if the friendship feels good, it is good.

Put yourself out there

Joining clubs and societies, attending religious meeting and other social events are a great way to meet new people and make great friends. One advantage of doing this is you can measure common interests, as we naturally tend to be drawn to people we share things with.

Be a better friend yourself

Be the friend that you would like to have. At worst, exhibit the traits you would like to see in your friend. Be reliable, thoughtful, trustworthy, and willing to share yourself and your time. There would be another you or better.

Give it time

Friendship takes work and time to develop. Be patient with your friendships as they blossom.
