Petroleum Engineering

Overview

Petroleum Engineering is concerned with the exploration for and extraction of hydrocarbons, e.g. crude oil and natural gas. Petroleum Engineers use creative and imaginative knowledge of petroleum geology, reservoir behaviour as well as fundamental engineering principles to develop effective and safe solutions for the exploration, recovery and transportation of hydrocarbon products trapped underground, onshore or offshore, and in very challenging environments. The course normally offers hands-on experience that gives students the technical skills to recover oil and gas from new and existing resources, and have the insight needed to address future industry challenges.

Entry Level

  • Undergraduate
  • Graduate
  • PhD

Entry Mode

This programme is widely taught as full time, part-time, distance or sandwich at most levels.

General Entry Requirements

Subject Specific Requirements

Prior qualification in General Science is necessary for enrollment in any of the courses.

WASSCE Entry requirements

Core: Credit passes (C6) in English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science & Social Studies Electives: Credit passes (C6) in any three elective subjects

American High School Grade 12

An applicant for admission to a degree programme in Ghana must have a Final Grade Point of at least 3.0 *Admissions will be to Level 100.

GCE (Cambridge) – ‘A’ and ‘O’ Levels

Applicants must have three relevant subjects at the Cambridge ‘A’ Levels. In addition, they must have at least five (5) passes including English and Mathematics at the Cambridge ‘O’ Level. *Most universities in Ghana welcome applications from students who follow the IB Diploma Programme and meet the following college requirements. Admissions will be to Level 100.

International Baccalaureate

Applicants must have at least Grade 4 in any Three (3) HL subjects. In addition, they must have at least Grade 4 in English Language/Literature (SL) and Mathematics (SL).

Postgraduate

Masters (MPhil, MA, MSc) A good first degree (at least a second class lower division) in a relevant field of study at any recognised University.

PhD

Normally a Master’s degree with research in the relevant field will be required for admission to this programme. Where an applicant is judged to have any deficiency, this may be remedied by requiring the applicant to make up as appropriate either by course work or mini-project or both.

How Programme Is Assessed

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: quizzes/interim/mid-semester tests, and project works completed throughout the course; and written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between universities, subject areas, years of study and individual courses. Most degree projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation during your final year of study.

Where This Degree Will Take You?

Petroleum Engineers have a grounding in chemistry, engineering, geology and physics while also learning about ethics, safety, communications and other skills necessary to pursuing a career in petroleum engineering. Once a graduate you could go on to work in one of the following roles:

  • Completions engineers
  • Drilling engineers
  • Natural gas engineers
  • Oil drilling engineers
  • Oil exploration engineers
  • Oil well engineers
  • Production engineers
  • Reservoir engineers

Please remember that many employers accept applications from graduates of any degree subject, so don't restrict your thinking to the jobs listed here.
