Animal Science

Overview

Animal science teach students how to feed, breed and care for animals and some universities focus on domesticated, farm or lab animals. Common concepts covered in these classes include, Animal Nutrition, Animal Anatomy and Physiology, Veterinary Parasitology, Beef Cattle Management, Companion Animal Care, Slaughterhouse Inspections

This programme is widely taught as full time, part-time, distance or sandwich at most levels.

General Entry Requirements

WASSCE/SSSCE Applicants

Candidates with the Senior High School Certificate must in addition to credit in the three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science), obtain credit passes in Chemistry, and any two of Physics, Biology/Agriculture Science, Geography and Elective Mathematics. The minimum requirement should be an aggregate score of 36 or better in the WASSCE and 24 or better in the SSSCE.

GCE 

Candidates must have five credits at the Ordinary Level examination or equivalent including English Language, Mathematics and either (i) Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Agricultural Science or (ii) General Science, Additional General Science, and any other subject (e.g. Economics, Geography, and Introduction to Business Methods etc). In addition, candidates should obtain three passes at the GCE Advanced Level or equivalent in either: (i) Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, and Biology/Agricultural Science or (ii) Economics, Mathematics, and Business Management/Geography.

Diploma Holders

Candidates with the Ordinary Diploma or Higher National Diploma (HND) from a recognised University or Polytechnic with a good Second Class Lower or Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) of 70% and above after a successful interview (depending on the university) would be admitted into the second year of the Programme.

Mature

• Must be, at least, 25 years by (*certain date). • Should have a minimum of GCE/SSSCE/WASSCE Certificate or an equivalent qualification. • Must pass a University Entrance Exam or aptitude test in Math and English.

GCE (Cambridge) – ‘A’ and ‘O’ Levels

• Applicants must have three relevant subjects at the Cambridge ‘A’ Levels. • They must also have at least five (5) passes including English and Mathematics at the Cambridge ‘O’ Level.

American High School Grade 12

An applicant must have a Final Grade Point of at least 3.0

Postgraduate

Masters (MPhil, MA, MSc) A good first degree (at least a second class lower division) in a relevant field of study at any recognised University. 

PhD 

Normally a Master’s degree with research in the relevant field will be required for admission to this programme. Where an applicant is judged to have any deficiency, this may be remedied by requiring the applicant to make up as appropriate either by course work or mini-project or both. 

How Programme Is Assessed

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: quizzes/interim/mid-semester tests, and project works completed throughout the course; and written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between universities, subject areas, years of study and individual courses. Most degree projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation during your final year of study.
